i got downvoted when I posted this to r/magictcg despite it being obviously right and everyone else also complaining about the story, so now I post it here, how they should have used urabrask to fix the story of March of the Machine

Now that we know how Phyrexia falls (Elesh Norn is the source of all the oil's power and without her it all kinda turns off) and what the Battle cards are (a whole series of planes heroically fighting off Phyrexian invasion) and what Urabrask did (not die but accomplish fuck-all) it's become really obvious that they could have done a LOT to fix this story, while maintaining almost all of the same beats, if they'd used Urabrask better.

Step 1: You cannot tell us at the last minute "oh yeah, the Oil is all running on Elesh Norn's power so when she dies it will turn off." We have to know enough ahead of time so that when it happens, we can go "ahhhh, I get it!" In order to not be a last second ass pull we need hints way earlier, which can help us in a lot of other ways. Show her gloating about how the Oil is synonymous with her will, how she focuses her power and mind into it to make it so incredibly powerful and infectious. Make it sound like "she is gloating about how All will be One through her but ohhhh actually it was her weakness too."

Step 2: use this to explain some rules about how the Oil works enough that we can understand fighting it. I have said many times that the Oil was too powerful and omni-infectious that a battle with the Phyrexians cannot follow rules, and I stand by that. Only maybe one or two of these Battle cards should show the planes repelling Phyrexia's invasion because the oil is so preposterously overpowered. It converts goddamn near anyone into a Phyrexian goddamn near instantly. If you touch the stuff, now you're one of them, immediately, and you can just go rubbing it on everyone else. Most of the characters we see depicted fighting the Phyrexians are having cool fantasy battle scenes, but those things shouldn't work and should immediately result in those characters being compleated based on how the oil works.

You can fix this when you make it explicit that the oil is so juiced up because of how much power Elesh Norn is pumping into it. The super-infectiousness is not a trait of the oil itself, it's a trait that Norn is empowering. All Will Be One and the oil is her will and, importantly, her focus. When fights break out in all these planes, we can then understand how those planes win: Elesh Norn's focus is split too many ways and the oil isn't as powerful on each battlefield. Her heralds or evangels or whatever are juicing it up on their own, but it's not nearly the same stuff. Now it makes sense why they can't mass-Compleat everyone in Ravnica instantly, they're split too many ways instead of pumping up one front.

Step 3: People have noted that invading all the planes at once was a bad idea for Norn, and it does appear to have been. It would have been an even worse idea if it was made clear that splitting her focus makes her less powerful. Why do that? This is where Urabrask comes in. Norn's original plan ISN'T to conquer the entire multiverse at once. She only plans to attack one plane, either Dominaria or Kamigawa, totally convert it, then with two planes worth of Phyrexia, take on two more planes, etc etc etc. She will be a slow and inexorable force that inevitably devours the multiverse.

But Urabrask, see, he's been in contact with the resistance because he's so rebellious, oh he's a renegade, and he comes back to Norn and says "Here, I tricked Tezzeret and the resistance and whoever else was appropriate to get this for you: some secret piece of information or technology or magic that will let you absolutely open the floodgates on the multiverse. They want to destroy us, and even though I hate you personally I don't want to see Phyrexia destroyed, so you have to think bigger. Way bigger. The only way to be sure nobody is going to try and rise us against you is to bum-rush the entire multiverse before anyone's prepared." Urabrask betrays the good guys! Oh no! We probably saw some characters put some kind of trust in him and he threw it back in their faces and now it's his fault the entire multiverse is under attack, that jerk!

Step 4: Norn invades the entire multiverse at once, starting the March of the Machine. Things look bad, casualties are mounting, cities are falling, but what's this? They're starting to fight back? They're showing off their own character and history in how they fight for their homes in their own unique ways? The Phyrexians are being held back? The Phyrexians are losing? Of course they are, that was what Urabrask was all about. He despises Elesh Norn and wants her to fail and then die. He also wants people to willingly accept phyresis. Despite being a cool bro, he is also a fundamentally alien monster with no sense of morality. Urabrask goaded Elesh into getting overconfident and haughty (a flaw white has) by playing on her emotions (a thing red is good at) and biting off way more than she could chew, because Norn's White ideology is about unity and cohesion and subsuming the individual into the whole while Urabrask's Red ideology is about freedom and individuality; his plan to fuck up Norn's forces by overcommitting shows us validation of his worldview because these planes are defending themselves to preserve their own identities and all these individual people doing things for their own reasons and own passions and own values can't be overcome by a singular will.

Then, of course, Norn finds this out and has his limbs chopped off and gets to establish she is still a threat by saying "I don't have to rush the multiverse any more, the taint of the Oil is still unstoppable and I have nothing but patience. We can slowly and inexorably grind them out on every world, as if we were a Death and Taxes monowhite strategy, they still can't fight us back and now there's far too many fronts open for them to deal with. At most, you delayed the inevitable because you're an impulsive idiot." This establishes that Norn is still a huge fucking multiversal threat that needs serious power to deal with, like Elspeth and Teferi. Urabrask doesn't solve the problem, his actions explain why the problem is in a position to be solved and set up the justification for how it happens.

After Norn's death, Urabrask has exactly what he wanted: he wants compleation as a step to personal perfection and self-realization that isn't forced on anyone. So the fact that just about every plane now has a huge puddle of Phyrexian oil that you can use but won't actively infect anyone is a huge win for him! The fact that trillions of people died in this war and he's leaving superweapons laying around for people to pick up and use on each other is completely inconsequential to him, because he's not a hero and he is a fundamentally alien mind.

This would be actually using the character they set up to do something with, it would show off the character traits of everyone and reflect their color philosophy, it would not require a significant change to the story outline and would not make him the star but a supporting character, and when we found out that everyone is saved when Norn dies it won't be a super convenient coincidence out of nowhere, it was information a character used to accomplish their goal. Urabrask could have died after this and we'd all be real happy with how it turned out.

Why am I the first one to think of this? The pieces are really, really obvious to assemble.

I’ve read many fics over the years, but even after all this time, I absolutely still have to say that this one is still currently my fave fic ever:

A Promise Made to Be Broken by PlantsAreNeat (E, 37,018 w., 7 Ch. || Fake Relationship, Pining, Slow Burn, RST, Eventual Relationship, POV Sherlock) – A young John makes an ‘if we’re still single at 40, we’ll get together’ pledge to a woman who ends up all wrong for him. She keeps reminding him of the promise, and won’t let go of it. John asks Sherlock to pose as his boyfriend at a family wedding, so as to dash her hopes permanently. Sherlock, who has at last acknowledged his feelings for John, reluctantly agrees despite knowing how painful it will be to ‘have’ John, but not keep him.

I’ve gone back to this fic so often I can pretty much read it on the back of my eyelids. I love the characterizations, and I love how each chapter starts as a flashback to John’s life. It’s so good. It’s fake relationship from Sherlock’s POV, which are rare already, and just the progression of their relationship feels so natural.

Plus, Sherlock has a John in his mind palace that he dresses up like a paper doll. I LOVE IT.

So yeah, please check out that fic. It’s one of my fave of all time. It’s silly and cute and JUST the right length, and I often go back to it if I’ve read a string of fics I just couldn’t get into. <3

I’d love to do a comic version of it, but my time management skills are garbage so I doubt it would ever happen, plus I don’t want to take away from the author so yeah. *shrugs*

Actually, another REALLY close contender, one that I’ve also read a tonne, is this one:

Iris by slashscribe (E, 11,948 w., 1 Ch. || Parentlock, Pining Sherlock, Post-S3) – Sherlock does his best to make John happy when John comes back to 221B with his new baby after the events of Season 3, but Sherlock has a track record of getting things wrong in this area. This story is an exploration of their gradual shift from friends to lovers, told from Sherlock's perspective, full of a lot of pining and lack of emotional awareness.

It was actually my fave BEFORE I read Promise, so yeah, two great fics if you’re looking for a couple shorter fics to read in a pinch.

Actually, let’s do the history, LOL. Here’s a couple of my fave long fics:

Midnight Blue Serenity by BeautifulFiction (E, 151,907 w., 19 Ch. || Friends to Lovers, Gay Bar / For a Case, Drugs, Pining, Case Fic, UST) – When Sherlock infiltrates a club in order to track down a serial killer, his altered appearance is enough to make John question his assumption that Sherlock is beyond his reach. However, is he the only one who appreciates his flatmate's charms, or is Sherlock at risk of becoming the next victim?

This one was my fave BEFORE Iris, but I also go back to it quite often if I want something longer to wrap comfortably around me. Also this one:

Shatter the Darkness (Let the Light In) by MojoFlower (E, 109,683 w., 23 Ch. || PODFIC AVAILABLE || Genie/Djinn AU || Magical Realism, Kidnapping, Genie Sherlock, First Kiss / Time, Case Fic, H/C, Angst, Clubs, John Whump, Mild DubCon, Hand / Blow Jobs, Torture) – Fairy tales are for those who remember how to dream; not John Watson, broken and hiding from his bleak future in a beige bedsit. But then he discovers a lamp and finds himself in the dangerous riptide of an enigmatic man whose very existence is unbelievable, murder charges against his sister, and the growing pains of feeling alive once more.

The fave fic BEFORE MBS LOL.

AND finally, my VERY FIRST fave Sherlock fic:

The Green Blade by verityburns (T, 72,929 w., 15 Ch. || Casefic, Bromance) – As a serial killer hits the headlines, the police are out of their depth and the next victim is out of time. With faith in Sherlock Holmes at an all time low, this is a case which will push loyalties to the limit...

When I first got into fandom, I read this one IN BETWEEN EVERY FIC I READ. I love it so much. I actually first read it on FFNet. THAT’S how old this one is. I only recently was shown it’s on Ao3 and I was SO happy I was able to have an eBook version of it now! <3

So yeah, check out those fics, LOL. I’ve SO many new faves, honest to goodness, and new fave authors to add to my list, AND I’m CERTAIN that I’ve still to read more of my fics that will be my faves in my 90 pages of MFLs on Ao3 LOL. But yeah, these fics are like coming home to a hot cocoa and warm blankie on a cold night. Not just because of my love for them, but there’s something about a fic that you’ve already ready countless times, and not having to invest too much energy into getting into that world again, but instead just REALLY taking in your favourite parts of those fics and just smiling and feeling all squidgy all over again at your fave parts. <3

That all said, please, authors, never stop writing. I love reading your worlds <3

BnHA Chapter 263: [Immigrant Song Intensifies]

Previously on BnHA: Ujiko sicced five Noumus on Miruko. Rephrase that: Ujiko sicced only five Noumus on Miruko. In hindsight this was obviously a mistake. Miruko proceeded to laugh and jump around kicking all of them and literally ripping the head off of the strongest one’s neck with nothing but her thighs. It was legendary and awe-inspiring and also she lost an arm but WHO EVEN CARES, I’m still pledging my allegiance to her. Miruko once beat the sun in a staring contest. Miruko’s calendar goes straight from March 31st to April 2nd, because nobody fucking fools Miruko. Anyway so also the heroes are finally attacking the League of Pliff’s HQ and Skeptic is running around all “AHHHH” so I guess we’ll see how that goes now.

Today on BnHA: Things finally get started over in Gunga, although for the time being most of the kids from 1-A and 1-B are still sitting around in the woods all pent-up and anxious and restlessly shipping KamiJirou. Meanwhile on the front lines, three-and-a-half-year-old Kaminari Denki is all “SOB I WANT TO BE BACK WITH MY FRIENDS WHERE IT’S SAFE”, to which Midnight, who I would just like to remind you is (1) an adult, (2) a teacher, and (3) a person responsible for this literal child’s safety in any number of other capacities, responds with “SORRY KIDDO WE NEED YOUR QUIRK.” I have yet to see any compelling evidence that they really do need it, but putting that dubious matter aside, Kaminari does kick some ass once he gets over his anxieties. Meanwhile Cementoss tears a building in half, Tokoyami reflects on how he was exposed to Kaminari’s good and pure moral character during their many soulful jam sessions, Hawks is about to kill Twice, and – wait, what.

a few stray thoughts since this chapter is taking forever to come out today. one, the good guys need to take out Twice and Toga as soon as they find them, because they’re currently the deadliest combination in the League. Twice for obvious reasons, and Toga because I’m pretty sure she got some of Aizawa’s blood that one time back during the Basement arc, and that fact coupled with the fact that she can now use the quirk of whoever she transforms into spells big trouble for the good guys since she can basically just cancel out whoever’s quirk she wants. plus she’s probably also immune to Midnight’s quirk. all in all bad news

two, it is interesting that Hagakure is the only 1-A kid we haven’t seen yet! probably just me overreacting, but still interesting!

(ETA: we do see her standing next to Mina in this chapter, so so much for that. you get out of it this time Tooru!)

and three, I’m not clear on whether or not Skeptic has actually figured out that Hawks betrayed them, or if he just suspects it, or if he thinks that Hawks leaked something accidentally and doesn’t realize that this entire time the dude was 100% playing them. I’m sure we’ll find out shortly. but regardless of how this plays out, I’m already dreading Twice’s reaction to all this :/ my sweet innocent baby. HE THOUGHT YOU WERE HIS FRIEND HAWKS. HE TRUSTED YOU. fff I really hope Twice’s inherently good and trusting nature isn’t a casualty of all this. then again I still think Twice himself is very unlikely to survive this. so basically I’m just bracing myself for pain sob

(ETA 2: by the way just to clarify, the above paragraphs were all written on Friday, and the rest of this recap+all ETAs were written the next day when I finally got to read the chapter! this is not important in any way whatsoever but now you know and that’s half the battle!)

“it’s time” holy shit finally lol. you all have been camped out over here for weeks now. not that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy each and every second of Miruko’s one-woman murder show, but it is nice to finally check in with you guys over here so we can get to work at last and I can get a better feel for who’s about to die. cuz someone here is dying guys

the chapter is called “I wanna be with the others!!” so. this is gonna be a Kaminari chapter isn’t it. I wonder what fresh new traitorous hijinks he’ll be getting up to this week. that detestable scoundrel

Mineta is being all weasel-y and reluctant, and honestly, I’m a bit annoyed. and for once it’s not directed at him! it’s like... how do I explain it. okay, so like, the manga is showing him being all cowardly and clearly not at all happy about being out here, and the fact that it’s Mineta doing it only adds to the general flavor of this being the wrong attitude to have and just a really shameful way of acting in general, because it’s Mineta and we all know Mineta is vile and so clearly he’s in the wrong here! the only thing is though, I actually don’t blame him even if he’s being a little shit about it, because the kids absolutely should not be here in the first place. are they strong? fuck yes. are they gonna end up being the ones to turn the tide once everything inevitably goes to shit, and thus the others are really goddamn lucky that they’re here? probably. does that make it right to conscript kids and send them out here to a soon-to-be war zone which the adults have very little control over meaning that some of these children will almost certainly be injured and traumatized and possibly even killed? nope! not right at all! no amount of “plus ultra” can justify this, folks. and “we get that it’s wrong but that’s just the fucked up times we live in” doesn’t actually justify it either, even if the HPSC seems to think so

but having said all that, there’s clearly nothing to be done about it at this point, and I’m about to enjoy this chapter of the kids presumably kicking ass even after all that whining, so I’ll just carefully climb down from my soapbox now. but I’m still keeping it handy just in case!

I’m pretty sure they understand the gravity of the situation my dude. and if they didn’t, I’d say that’s honestly on you guys and not on them because, again, they’re kids. and if you didn’t want a bunch of teenagers goofing off during your incredibly dangerous and vitally important do-or-die hero mission, then maybe you shouldn’t have brought a bunch of teenagers to your incredibly dangerous and vitally important do-or-die hero mission

“listen makeste are you just going to sit around all day bitching about my cardinal sin of daring to involve your precious little darlings in the actual plot,” the imaginary Horikoshi that sits around trying to keep these recaps from veering off track interjects. and okay fine

okay, Twice is on the Black squad and Dabi and Otter Pop are on Violet. so they’re being dispatched to the front, while Toga, Compress, Spinner, and Skeptic himself (how convenient for you Skeptic) are heading to the Assembly Hall. isn’t that nice that Dabi is heading out to the front, where my son Kaminari “Clapton” Denki is. hahaha. fuck

Lefty Hair is now making a sudden appearance and giving Skeptic some threatening “you majorly fucked up and the only reason I’m letting it slide for now is because we’ve got bigger things to worry about” vibes, which I like. also he has a cigarette. it’s been a while since I’ve seen a manga character actually smoke a cigarette.
